Once upon a time, a prince named Charming went to awaken his sleeping love with a kiss, but his smelly breath woke her up first. There are numerous reasons for smelly breath, and one of them is gum disease, a grave disorder affecting the teeth and gums.

Gum disease is very prevalent in the United States, and there are more than 3 million cases annually. Periodontal disease is also more common in men than in women, and seniors are more at risk for it than those under about 20 years of age. It is always among the top five most common oral diseases, and we see patients with periodontal disease every hour.

There are numerous different products for caring for gum disease. You may notice that many of the toothpastes currently available on the market have advertisements for “gum disease control,” and you should recognize that this regularly means that the toothpaste is fluoridated. Fluoride fights periodontal disease by enhancing the tooth enamel, making it difficult for acids to consume away at the chompers. Because smelly breath is a symptom of gum disease, you may deliberate on using mouthwash to freshen your breath, but the greatest products for fighting periodontal disease are still toothbrushes and floss.
